Vikos Gorge | Zagori | Guiness Listed Deepest Gorge in the World

Vikos Gorge is situated in the Pindus Mountains of northern Greece, 30 Km northwest of Ioannina city, on the southern slopes of Mount Tymfi, with a length of about 11 km. It was created by very intense geological processes, while the first traces of human activity that were located, date back to 40,000 BC.

Vikos is listed as the deepest gorge in the world by the Guinness Book of Records among others. It has a depth ranging from 450m to 1600m and a width ranging from 400m to only a few meters at its narrowest part.

Voidomatis, a tributary of the Aoos river, which flows through it, has water during all seasons. The hike for an experienced team lasts about 5 hours, with important views at Beloe and Oxia seats.

The gorge is the core of the National Park of Vikos - Aoos which hosts many rare species of flora and fauna. At the end of the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century, many of its herbs were used by vikodoctors (practitioners) for treatments.
