Geology and Geography

The geological history of Vikos Gorge dates back to the Paleolithic era, when the area was covered by a shallow sea. It was created by very intense geological processes, while the first traces of human activity that were located date back to 40,000 BC. Specifically, over time, the sea receded, and the Pindus Mountains rose, creating a rugged landscape of limestone and shale.

The Voidomatis River, which originates from the nearby Aoos Springs, began to carve its way through the mountains, forming the deep and narrow canyon we see today. Vikos Gorge is part of the Vikos-Aoos National Park, which covers an area of 12,600 hectares and includes a wide range of habitats, from alpine meadows to dense forests.

Hiking and Adventure

One of the main attractions of Vikos Gorge is its hiking trails, which offer visitors a chance to explore the canyon's stunning scenery and experience its natural beauty up close. There are several trails of varying difficulty, ranging from easy walks to challenging treks that require experienced hikers and mountaineers. The most popular trail is the Vikos Gorge Trail, which runs along the bottom of the canyon and provides breathtaking views of the cliffs and the river. The trail is about 12 kilometers long and takes around 6-7 hours to complete. For more adventurous visitors, there are also opportunities for rock climbing, canyoning, and rafting in the gorge. These activities are organized by local tour operators and require special equipment and expertise. Rafting, in particular, is a thrilling way to experience the canyon's rapids and waterfalls, and is suitable for all levels of experience. Voidomatis, a tributary of the beautiful Aoos river, which flows through it, has water during all seasons. The hike for an experienced team lasts about 5 hours, with important views at Beloe and Oxia seats.
