Geology and Geography

The geological history of Vikos Gorge dates back to the Paleolithic era, when the area was covered by a shallow sea. It was2 created by very intense geological processes, while the first traces of human activity that were located date back to 40,000 BC. Specifically, over time, the sea receded, and the Pindus Mountains rose, creating a rugged landscape of limestone and shale.

The Voidomatis River, which originates from the nearby Aoos Springs, began to carve its way through the mountains, forming the deep and narrow canyon we see today. Vikos Gorge is part of the Vikos-Aoos National Park, which covers an area of 12,600 hectares and includes a wide range of habitats, from alpine meadows to dense forests.
