Most wine experts believe that Malvasia grapes are of ancient origin, most likely having their origins in Crete. The name "Malvasia" probably comes from Monemvasia, known in Italian as "Malvasia".

Monemvasia has probably acted as a trading center for wine produced in east Peloponnese and in some of the Cyclades.
