3 Offbeat Experiences in California Beyond Beaches and Big Cities

Author:

D.F.

Think California, and dazzling beaches and bustling cities come to mind. The US state is packed to the brim with things to do, from taking in the glamor of Los Angeles to walking the Golden Gate in San Francisco. But guess what? The state also has some off-the-beaten-track destinations that will have you spellbound. These spots are ideal for travelers who enjoy quiet experiences or desire to connect with nature and history. If you are planning to visit California for your next vacation, we have three recommendations for unusual experiences you should consider. Memories for a lifetime guaranteed!

1. Time-Travelling to the Surreal Joshua Park

Have you seen a Joshua tree before? They are bent and twisty and completely unearthly-looking. We bet you won’t be able to suppress a feeling of being transported to another planet when you behold them in California’s Joshua Tree National Park.

The US state is well-known for its national parks, but Yosemite often takes center stage for its stunning summits. In contrast, Joshua Tree National Park combines two deserts, the Colorado and the Mojave, creating a standout landscape in the process.

According to Conservation International, the unique appearance of the Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia) comes from its adaptation to the area’s low rainfall.

Even the history behind its name is intriguing. The story goes that Mormon settlers gave the tree its name after the biblical Joshua, who directed people, with outstretched arms (branches, in this case).

Whether the story is true or not, Joshua trees are certainly something: their leaves were made into baskets and sandals, and their seeds were food. Today, a lot of the park’s wildlife relies on these trees for protection, from the oriole bird to rats and desert night lizards.

The park is also replete with other fascinating sights that add to its surreal nature. Check out the Cholla Cactus Garden with the “teddybear cholla” by day, and immerse yourself in stargazing by night.

Tip: Be careful if you’re planning a trip anytime soon, as the government shutdown may affect some US national parks. The current funding lapse can impact many park employees.

2. Floating Above Napa Vineyards

You may have heard about California’s famous wine regions, Napa and Sonoma.

The vineyards here see thousands of tourists every year. While you can spontaneously explore some of the best walk-in wineries, like Peju and Walt, others need prior booking. Wine connoisseurs note that the excellent fermentation and aging equipment complements organic farming practices to create wines with unparalleled mouthfeel.

Okay, vineyard tours sound good…but not exactly offbeat? Well, how would you like to float over them? Imagine: you are drifting in the skies in a hot air balloon, watching the colorful valleys below come alive as the day gets older. It can be an experience you will always remember fondly, especially if you share it with your loved ones.

According to Napa Valley Aloft, a sunrise balloon ride can be the best way to experience the scenic beauty of the region to its fullest. The early morning is quieter and calmer, and you can appreciate these moments better without the background noise.

3. Blast From The Past in Cerro Gordo Ghost Town

Many years ago, Cerro Gordo was a silver mining town. It was full of saloons and dance halls, merriment in every corner. The miners supplied silver to Los Angeles, playing a pivotal role in the growth of one of California’s biggest cities today.

Alas, the city’s history is tainted with violence. So much so that some reports suggest it witnessed one murder every week.

No wonder that all that violence eventually led to the city’s collapse. But the city is open to visitors today, who can relive the wildness of times gone by, ghosts or otherwise. History enthusiasts will adore the impressive collection of mines (now abandoned) and refurbished buildings.

Business Insider reported in 2024 that the town was bought by Brent Underwood, an American entrepreneur, for $1.4 million. He admitted that life in Cerro Gordo can be lonely and isolating. However, he has found his purpose in a long-term project that he can devote his life to.

If nothing else, a visit to this ghost town can be a lesson in how places affect people differently. Some of us stay away from all things shadowy; others endeavour to fill places with light.

A California tour can be the perfect holiday. It offers everything, from spectacular beaches to brilliant museums, great wine, and culture. However, with most of us time-strapped, it is worth exploring experiences that a typical travel itinerary may omit.

While these recommendations are 100% Insta-worthy, they go deeper than that. They present opportunities to connect with the nature and history buff in you, the connoisseur who appreciates life’s good things and is willing to tread unfamiliar territory.
