Mytilini was founded in the 11th century BC. It is the capital and port of the island of Lesbos and the capital of the North Aegean Region.
Built on the southeast edge of the island, it has numerous neoclassical buildings, public and private houses. The city has ouzo production units and it exports sardines harvested from the Bay of Kalloni, as well as olive oil. It also has two excellent archaeological museums, an old harbor and a famous ancient theatre.
